Delegate Jon Cardin said Tuesday that Maryland needs to enact serious consequences for so-called revenge porn. He described that as when someone posts online explicit pictures of someone else — perhaps a former spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend — without his or her consent.

Tche delegate said most of the current privacy laws predate computers, so he is writing a bill that would make revenge porn a felony. Cardin said he believes the threat of a $25,000 fine or a five-year prison term would deter many would-be offenders.

Cardin is running for Attorney General.
