The Florence Morning News reported that William Breazeale, an alumnus of Francis Marion University and the son of a founding faculty member, has put together a committee to look at bringing football to the Florence school.
Breazeale says that a committee member knows former Clemson and Arkansas head coach Danny Ford and they would like for him to come out of retirement to help start a football program at the school. Breazeale and the committee are attempting to gauge interest from FMU students, alumni, and other sports fans in the area.
So far, Breazeale has run into a brick wall at the school, which has no interest in meeting with him or discussing the creation of a football program. An unnamed university official cited costs for academic operating expenses and the large expense of a new stadium as factors. Breazeale has suggested that a local stadium be refurbished and shared with a local school district.
