UPDATE: Hough also sent out a press release with an authority line on it trumpeting this site today which I didn’t get (firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to add me and get some coverage Del. Hough.) Additionally, they used the tiniest font possible to put an authority line on the site itself. Most of my comments still stand and would you really send out a press release taking credit for such an awful looking site? I’ve included the press release taking credit for this disaster of a site at the bottom of this post.
First there was HoughRefund.com. Nobody is certain who is behind that site that is asking that Del. Mike Hough return campaign contributions now that he is running for the Senate against Senate Minority Leader David Brinkley.
Now we have LiberalDavidBrinkley.com coming to the forefront. It’s not a bad idea to do a website against a candidate you’re trying to defeat, but it’s pretty ham-handed to put together a site in 2014 that is so horrible looking. It doesn’t make anybody want to flock to using GoDaddy’s website builder. It makes it worse that a platform that can be use to maked much better looking sites was used to make something that would have been bad looking even in the 1990s. I should know, I was building websites in raw HTML code by hand in notepad back then, and nothing I built was ever this awful.
Additionally, it’s ignorant at best to not use Domains by Proxy to mask who registered the domain in a situation like this. In the run-up to the 2000 presidential primaries, and more specifically the South Carolina primary, there was an anti-McCain site that attacked him on hot button issues. Even back then (1999-2000), whoever built that site was smart enough to work to conceal their identity in the domain name registration (even though Domain by Proxy didn’t exist.) Anyone now building an attack site like this should be smart enough to use Domains by Proxy. The service does cost a little bit more, but it’s just an add-on to your Go Daddy bill that you only have to pay once a year at most.
This brings me to the domain name registration information for LiberalDavidBrinkley.com. The domain name is registered to Edward “Ted” Dacey of Frederick, who is running Mike Hough’s campaign and is a legislative aide in Hough’s office. One thing in Hough’s defense, someone trashing this site online this morning claims definitively that Dacey is doing the site on state time, but I see no evidence of that. Without proof, that’s a pretty spurious accusation to make without proof. Tying the site to Dacey and Hough through the self-inflicted wound of not hiding the domain name registration plus how awful the site’s execution is does enough damage for now. If you think he’s doing it on state time, get proof and then go after that later instead of possibly discrediting all your criticism now with an unfounded charge.
Here’s a screen capture of the domain name registration:

Everyone knew this race would get nasty, but I expected a little more sophistication to the nastiness. I’ve had more than one person in the past few weeks talk about how hard Ted Dacey plays when he works for a campaign, but, as one Republican operative recently said, “he’s not the brightest bulb.”
Not concealing the domain name registration is the biggest mistake in this instance. The site, which is extremely sad, could still be improved in appearance now. Content is more important than appearance most of the time in a site, but the appearance in this case is so bad it detracts from the content. The domain could probably still be concealed, but the cat is out of the bag now.
Buckle your seat belts, this is going to be a bumpy ride.
Here’s the Hough press release bragging about the site:
Hough Launches LiberalDavidBrinkley.com
Frederick, MD – In the interest of full disclosure and transparency, Delegate Michael Hough, Republican candidate for Maryland Senate District 4 (Frederick & Carroll Counties) has launched the websitewww.liberaldavidbrinkley.com.
“I think it is important for voters to know where Senator Brinkley and I stand on the issues and be able to compare our records. Frankly, I think people will be shocked to see that 20-year incumbent David Brinkley has voted 46 times to raise taxes and fees, co-sponsored legislation to increase Frederick’s gas tax and voted to support Obamacare in Maryland,” Hough explains.
The site outlines the specific bills so that anyone go online and see first-hand Senator Brinkley’s liberal tax-and-spend record.
Hough continues, “Career politicians, and establishment politicians like David Brinkley refuse to come clean about their records. They say one thing at home and vote a different way in Annapolis. Now withwww.liberaldavidbrinkley.com voters in Frederick & Carroll Counties can see David Brinkley’s liberal record for themselves.”
