Trey Gowdy to headline MD GOP’s Red, White, & Blue Dinner

The Maryland Republican Party has announced that Congressman Trey Gowdy is the featured guest at the 2014 Red, White, & Blue Dinner. The dinner will be held on June 19 at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center in Ellicott City.

Just today, Gowdy was officially announced as the Chairman of the House Select Committee investigating Benghazi.

Harold Watson Gowdy III was a federal prosecutor in South Carolina before being elected Circuit Solicitor (equivalent to a district attorney or – in Maryland – a local state’s attorney) for the Circuit that includes Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. He graduated Spartanburg High School (my mom’s alma mater), Baylor University, and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Gowdy clerked for Judge John Gardner of the South Carolina Court of Appeals and for federal Judge Ross Anderson. Gowdy  was in private practice before becoming a federal prosecutor. After defeating an incumbent solicitor, he prosecuted seven death penalty cases and was re-elected twice without opposition.

Gowdy defeated incumbent Congressman Bob Inglis in the Republican Primary for the 4th District in 2010. Inglis had a 93% rating from the American Conservative Union but ran afoul of conservatives in the district for stances including his support of cap and trade. Gowdy was re-elected n 2012.

His time in Congress has included his opposition to Speaker Boehner’s bill raising the debt ceiling and opposition to a defense authorization act due to concerns about indefinite detention without a trial for national security reasons. Gowdy received a Defender of Economic Freedom Award from Club for Growth and he calls himself “pro-life plus” when he says that “the strategy should be broader than waiting for the Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade.”

Last year’s Red, White, & Blue Dinner featured Congressman Paul Ryan. My blogging on that event was featured in a Washington Examiner story.
