Drone used in prison contraband smuggling

South Carolina prison officials have reported that they found a crashed drone outside Lee Correctional Institution earlier this year. The drone was being used in an attempt to smuggle cigarettes, cellphones, and marijuana.

From a news report:

Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens said Wednesday that officials found a crashed drone in bushes outside Lee Correctional Institution earlier this year. At the site, Givens says officers also found contraband materials, including cellphones, tobacco products and marijuana.

One suspect has been charged and another is being sought. Officials report it’s the first contraband-smuggling by drone attempt that they know of.

Cellphones and other contraband have been a constant struggle for prison officials everywhere. Earlier this year, a hip-hop video went viral that was filmed by inmates in South Carolina using a cellphone.
