Report: Former DC Mayor Marion Barry Dies at 78

WUSA reports:

Sources close to the family tell WUSA 9 reporter Bruce Johnson that former DC Mayor Marion Barry has passed away.

Family and very close associates are gathering at this hour at United Medical Center in Southeast, DC as word spreads.

The 78-year-old Barry was just released from Howard University Hospital this evening where he had been admitted on Thursday.

Tweets about the situation by Johnson and others were confusing the situation because of earlier reports on his release and the newer ones that he was dead. WUSA posted this story at 2 a.m. EST.

  1. If you ever met him you had to give him credit, he got things done. I remember one rush hour morning when a District Police Officer wrecked his cruiser and when Marion and his driver happened upon the scene he got out and directed traffic for the next 15 minutes, not as a stunt. I always left with a smile when running into him, he had the personality of a Professional Wrestler and could turn most incidents into positive press, that’s why they needed hidden camera’s to take him down.He told a Welfare Grandmother to stop having babies and the resident’s of S.E. Washington to stop using Ambulances as taxi’s. There have been many worse people in the world, and like he told me when I questioned him about a construction contract that had some gray area’s , “you’re talking to an Eagle Scout”.
