DNC bus dumps raw sewage down storm drain

WSB-TV in Atlanta reports that local authorities in Gwinnett County are investigating a report that a bus being used by the DNC (Democratic National Committee) dumped raw sewage into a storm drain (above photo from WSB-TV.)

An employee at an O’Reilly Auto Parts store reported seeing the bus pull into a turn lane on the road outside the store. According to the employee, the RV driver got out and opened the drain plug on the bus. All of the sewage from the bus lavatory then drained out onto the street and into the storm drain. The employee also took photographs that were provided to the police.

A police report indicated that there was a “foul smell” and a “large amount” of”drying toilet paper” where the bus had parked in the roadway. A fire department hazmat team was called to clean up the spill.

A statement from the DNC to WSB apologized:

This was an honest mistake and we apologize to the Lawrenceville community for any harm we may have caused. We were unaware of any possible violations and have already taken corrective action with the charter bus company to prevent this from happening again. Furthermore, the DNC will work with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, as well as local and state officials to determine the best course of corrective action.

The first part of this statement seems far-fetched and seems a bit disingenious with the “may have caused” phrase. That part reeks of apologies to anyone who might have been offended in other faux apologies by people committing wrongdoing.

DNC not the only offender

In 2005, a tour bus driver for the Dave Matthews Band admitted dumping 800 pounds of sewage onto passengers on a tour boat on the Chicago River. The bus was on a bridge at the time. The driver, Stefan Wohl, received 18 months probation and was also sentenced to a $10,000 fine and 150 hours of community service. The band had previously given $50,000 to the Chicago Park District and Friends of the Chicago River. Wohl apparently never drove for the band again.

Followup: man charged with setting fire to Atlanta church

Juan Carlos Ramirez, who was originally charged with disorderly conduct after being found naked outside a burning Byzantine Catholic Church in Atlanta over the weekend, has now been charged with arson:

Officials have not established a motive in Sunday’s fire at the Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church, but Juan Carlos Ramirez, 24, of Roswell, was charged with arson “as a result of the investigation and a subsequent confession,” Roswell Fire Department spokesman Paul Piccirilli said in an emailed statement.

A local news report can be seen below:

Byzantine Catholic Church in Atlanta burned

Before and After

The Roswell Fire Department responded to the fire at the Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church on Old Alabama Road around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Parts of the church and about an acre of woods surrounding the building were in flames when firefighters arrived, according to Channel 2 Action News. The fire cause heavy damage to the building. A passerby spotted the fire and called 911, Channel 2 reported.

I would guess the leading suspect is already in custody. Juan Carlos Ramirez was arrested near the scene. It was reported that

Police told Channel 2 the man was “running around naked” and saying he either was Jesus or knows him. Ramirez had not officially been connected to the fire as of Sunday afternoon.

A nearby Orthodox church is letting Epiphany use their building for Masses.

From the church website:

Byzantine Catholics are in union with Rome. We share the same basic faith and the same sacraments; however, the way of expressing them differs. The Byzantine church is one of many Eastern churches, each with their own heritage of theology, liturgy and discipline developed with their own respective languages and ecclesiastical organizations.

The parish is part of the Byzantine Eparchy of Passaic.

Michael Graham lands new job on Atlanta radio station

DCRTV is where I first learned this news:

Righty rager Michael Graham (right), who got fired from DC news talker WMAL in 2005, lands a job at Cumulus’s co-owned Atlanta news talker WYAY, doing the late morning slot. Randall Bloomquist, who was Graham’s boss back then at WMAL, is now based in Atlanta and runs Cumulus’s news talk division, which oversees both WYAY and WMAL. Besides DC, Graham has also worked in Boston, Charlotte, and Richmond. He got fired from WMAL following a dispute with the DC-based Council On American-Islamic Relations over comments he made about Muslims.

Graham also wore a INS t-shirt to a CASA de Maryland rally and was told to leave or where it inside out when he was working at WMAL. He had been working in Boston and Worcester (a show on 5 stations in New England) recently. I first met him when he had just started his show at WBT in Charlotte.  I was working at The Andy Thomas Show as a political reporter at the time and I had started Palmetto Journal a few months earlier.

The station – originally all news – is going through a transformation. Last fall, Kim “The Kimmer” Peterson joined the noon to 3 p.m. shift to do a talk show. Then Cumulus announced the Braves would join the station, taking a major slice of airtime during the baseball season.

On Monday, May 12, All News is adding a second talk show – Michael Graham from 9 a.m. to noon. Bloomquist said there would be no immediate changes to news staffing beyond Perry’s departure.

Bloomquist declined to say anything to me about Graham beyond what was in the original press release. (“Michael Graham is a next-generation talk radio talent—smart, opinionated and very funny. His show will be an entertaining and inclusive conversation about the things that are truly important and interesting to his Atlanta area audience.”)

Graham graduated from Oral Roberts University after growing up in the small town of Pelion, South Carolina. He was a standup comedian and, as a political consultant, worked for Pat Buchanan in the 1992 SC Primary. He also worked for Harold Worley in the Republican primary in 1996 against Strom Thurmond.

When Graham worked for the SC Secretary of State, he also hosted a weekend radio show on SC Public Radio. After comments he made on his radio show angered members of the state legislature, they wrote his job in the Secretary of State’s office out of the state budget. This resulted in his first book – Banned from Public Radio.

Graham also wrote a laugh-out-loud funny weekly column that appeared in the Charleston City Paper and in Free Times. His second book, Clinton & Me, featured a picture of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky on the cover. At a book signing, he inscribed my copy to “South Carolina’s Matt Drudge.” He wrote another book called Redneck Nation after that and has written ebooks as well.

I’ve been on his show before, in both Charleston and Charlotte if I remember correctly. Having both Michael Graham and The Kimmer on the same station will certainly cause me to listen to WYAY online.
