Junipero Serra to be canonized during papal visit to US

Catholic News Agency:

In a surprise addition to his fall 2015 trip to the U.S., Pope Francis is planning to canonize the founder of California’s first missions, Bl. Junipero Serra.

“In September, God willing, I will canonize Junipero Serra in the United States,” declared Pope Francis aboard Sri Lankan Air Flight UL4111 on the way to Manila.

Bl. Serra, a Franciscan priest, lived in what is now California in the 1700s. A Spanish-born missionary, he founded the first nine of 21 eventual missions in California. He worked tirelessly with the Native Americans, and is said to have baptized more than 6,000 people, and confirmed 5,000.

“He was the evangelizer of the west in the United States,” Pope Francis beamed.

Bl. Serra’s canonization will be the latest in a systematic action from Pope Francis to give a boost to evangelization efforts throughout the world.

Serra will be the latest “equipollent” canonization – meaning no miracle was verified and the normal process was waived so that the Pope could declare him to be a saint.

Pope Francis will be in Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families in September and may also be visiting Washington and New York. It is not known where the canonization would take place, but Serra is entombed at Mission San Carlos Borroméo del río Carmelo in Carmel-by-the-Sea in California (Clint Eastwood was the town’s mayor at one point.)

During the American Revolution, Serra had a collection taken up in mission parishes and sent those funds to General George Washington.

Allegations by some that he mistreated native Americans were dismissed as unfounded during his beatification process. in fact, the truth was reported to be be very different:

Dr. Iris Engstrand, professor and chair of the Department of History at the University of San Diego, described him as “much nicer to the Indians, really, than even to the governors. He didn’t get along too well with some of the military people, you know. His attitude was, ‘Stay away from the Indians.’ I think you really come up with a benevolent, hard-working person who was strict in a lot of his doctrinal leanings and things like that, but not a person who was enslaving Indians, or beating them, ever….He was a very caring person and forgiving. Even after the burning of the mission in San Diego, he did not want those Indians punished. He wanted to be sure that they were treated fairly…”

Black Guerilla Family gang threatens to “storm” NYPD precincts and “shoot it out”

Police are on high alert after receiving “credible” threats targeting two of their Brooklyn precincts days after the execution-style murders of two NYPD officers, according to the Sergeants Benevolence Association.

In tweets posted Tuesday night by the SBA, they warn of the Black Guerrilla Family, which allegedly threatened to “storm” the 79th and 81st Precincts and “shoot it out” with officers inside.

The PIX11 report also indicated the security at the 81st had been beefed up with an ESU (Emergency Services Unit) presence. The SBA told NYPD officers to travel in pairs and to carry their weapons at all times (both on and off-duty which I figured was already the norm.)

The NY Daily News has more on the increased security at both precincts.

Bongino: NYC Mayor de Blasio should “resign in disgrace”

Dan Bongino, former NYPD officer and former Secret Service agent called on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to “resign in disgrace” today on Neal Cavuto’s Fox News show today. Video is below the transcript at the bottom of this post.

Breitbart has details:

“He [de Blasio] almost made the case against voting in people like Mayor de Blasio…he has an ideological problem, Charles. He doesn’t have a policy problem. this is a man who believes in the advancement and trading of chaos, believes in the destruction of American institutions, he subscribes to an ideology that is so un-American and if that press conference didn’t just drive that home, and, Charles, to double down on the embarrassment for this man, to blame the media, the New York City media, that has covered for this guy, the large majority of them, that was would humiliating experience and should be reason alone for this man to resign in shame tomorrow” he declared.

Bongino continued, “I have a number of friends I went through the police academy with almost 19 years ago that call me and text me all the time and said that during these protests, ‘yes, we absolutely respect at the right to peacefully protest. No question.’ They were told basically to stand down, let them blow off steam, despite the fact, Charles, that there were people out there who were never interested in peaceful protests. They were interested in spitting in police officers’ faces, pushing these people.”

He denied that the rift between de Blasio and the cops is not like usual disagreements between police unions and City Hall, stating “When i was a police officer we had some arguments with mayor giuliani…it was never, and let me be clear on this, it was never about Mayor Giuliani not actually backing up his own police department. these were arguments about financial arrangements…these were never about a mayor who doesn’t believe in his own police department. These are, what I said when we opened up the segment, these are ideological differences, this man is unfit to lead.”

Top golf courses rejected Obama over Labor Day Weekend

NBC New York reports on several New York-area golf courses that refused President Barack Obama’s business over Labor Day weekend:

The Trump National Golf Club, the Winged Foot and Willow Ridge were among some of the elite courses that rebuffed the president’s request to tee off there, according to several sources who were told about the president’s advance team’s calls to the club managers

Club managers apparently did not want to inconvenience their high-powered and high-paying members over Labor Day weekend by shutting down their courses to accommodate the president.

The president was in town Friday, Aug. 29 for fundraising events in New York and Rhode Island. He had been scheduled to stay overnight in Westchester County in order to attend the Saturday evening wedding of MSNBC host Alex Wagner and White House chef Sam Kass at Blue Hill Farm.

The story notes that the presidential advance team was looking for a tee time Saturday morning. If you will recall Obama unexpectedly returned to Washington Friday night and then went back to New York for the wedding Saturday. Labor Day weekend is a busy weekend for golf courses.
